Where Tradition meets Tomorrow

A superb riverside setting and Mediterranean Romanesque architecture assure The University of Western Australia its widely acknowledged status as Australia's most beautiful university campus.

Located on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, the capital city of Australia's largest State -- Western Australia -- the University is the State's longest established tertiary institution.

As a centre for learning, it combines the refined traditions of the world's old and great universities with the esprit and excitement of study and research in the 1990s.

The University, which opened in 1913, has acquired an international reputation for excellence and enterprise. It is regarded as one of Australia's top research institutions, attracting researchers of world standing across the range of disciplines, with international leaders in many diverse fields.

The University has a strong research culture. Recently it attracted more competitive research funding -- on a per capita basis of staff involved in research -- than any other Australian University. This strength in research makes the University especially appealing to students from across Australia, and from neighbouring Asian nations, Europe and America.

The high calibre of its teaching staff, state-of-the-art research facilities, well-equipped lecture theatres and laboratories -- plus a superb range of arts venues that accommodate some of the city's most celebrated cultural events -- provide a learning environment that stimulates both creativity and innovation. From its extensive art collection to its wealth of sporting facilities, the University seeks to meet the cultural and recreational needs of students, staff and the broader community.

Collaborative research, exchange programmes involving institutions in Asia, Europe and America, plus computer connections across the world, have created a complex web that links The University of Western Australia with an ever widening and exciting world of learning and research.
